Job Location and Equipment Utilized
Work is performed in an outdoor environment in seasonal heat, cold, and all other weather conditions. Exposure to toxic or hazardous substances, vibrations, airborne particles, dirt, fumes, and traffic also occur. Equipment utilized includes large vehicles and other equipment such as backhoes, loaders, various kinds of trucks, street sweepers, paving equipment, and other standard construction vehicles. Along with other kinds of hand-held equipment, including concrete saws, jackhammers, compressors, sandblasters, spray guns and hand tools are also required.
Essential Job Functions
Includes, but is not limited to such essential functions as listed below:
- Receive written and oral work assignments from supervisor and/or foreman; assist in determining necessary equipment, personnel, and material needs.
- Assist in determining or determine best way to set up job site; obtain and set up equipment, tools and materials needed to complete assignment.
- Operate heavy and/or specialized construction equipment.
- Cut out asphalt and concrete; prepare sub-surface for patching; repair streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, stairs, retaining walls, catch basins, driveways and approaches, speed bumps with asphalt; mix, pour, and finish concrete.
- Lay out traffic markings in streets according to blueprints; apply or remove paint stripe, thermoplastic markings, pavement markers, buttons and reflectors according to M.U.T.C.D.
- Perform general street sweeping using a street sweeper; perform routine operator maintenance on machine to include broom replacement and vacuum head adjustments.
- Replace signs and mounts; maintain sign inventory logs; monitor areas of City for sign need, replacement or elimination.
- Install and maintain storm pipes and structures, traffic vaults and boxes, telemetry conduit, manholes, culverts, basins and drains as assigned.
- Install, clean and maintain catch basins; excavate and maintain ponds as assigned.
- Mow and maintain right-of-ways; perform vegetation control as needed.
- Operate snow and ice removal equipment during inclement weather.
- Direct the work of other Maintenance Workers, seasonal workers, Community Service Workers, and other volunteers as assigned.
- Dig and install sewer lines; following grade & line per plans.
- Clean and vacuum sewer lines and remove blockages, using flusher trucks, rodder trucks, hand rods and high pressure water hoses.
- Enter confined spaces and manholes using confined space procedures.
- Use video camera, pipe locators and detectors to inspect system for leaks, blockages, or construction problems.
· Update asset management information on office or field computers and develop and run status reports.
- Perform other general maintenance work as assigned.
- Maintain regular attendance.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of safe work practices, including safety precautions for operating power and heavy equipment and performing routine maintenance on power and heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
- Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations and flow patterns.
- Ability to use standard construction tools, such as hammer, saw, drill, wrench, screwdriver, sprayer, chain saw and other tools.
- Ability to operate various types of heavy equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, diagrams, blueprints and maps.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to work with cleaning fluids, paints, cleaning agents and other solutions.
- Ability to plan and set up work and delegate tasks to others.
- Ability to train others in the use of machinery.
- Ability to take basic measurements of boards or spaces.
- Ability to provide safe traffic flow patterns.
- Ability to perform general vehicle maintenance.

Required Physical Traits
- Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 80 pounds.

Qualifications
· Requires three (3) years’ experience in street or utility maintenance or construction work or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
· Requires three (3) years’ experience in water, sewer, or street construction or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
· Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License with CDL ‘B’ certification with an air-brake endorsement; prefer a CDL ‘A’ certification with a driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance carrier.
· Must possess and retain Washington State Traffic Control Flagger certification or be able to obtain within six months of hire.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $31.71 - $40.09 per hour
