Position Summary
The Construction Group Leader provides leadership and direction to the Team Leaders in the Landscape Construction Division and is accountable for the overall results of the Division, including strategic, operational, and revenue objectives. He or she ensures that team resources are coordinated and used efficiently, personnel are adequately developed, and client needs and expectations are being met. The Group Leader is responsible for demonstrating and promoting positive leadership principles, integrity, and ethical behavior and for building and maintaining trusting relationships with team members and clients.
This position reports to the Director of Design-Build and supervises approximately 2-5 team members that can include Landscape Team Leaders, Team Leader Entry’s, and Senior Team Leaders.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Minimum of four years’ experience in the landscape construction field
Minimum of two years’ experience in a supervisory position, preferably in a landscape construction environment or a service-related business that involved route and outdoor work
Knowledge of horticultural practices, woody and perennial plant culture, and pest management
Knowledge of maintenance requirements related to hardscape, low voltage lighting, water features, and irrigation systems
Ability to read and write (in English)
Ability and willingness to work weekend hours
Ability and willingness to work overtime hours when needed
Proficiency with all equipment listed in the “Special Equipment” section of this document
Strong communication, collaboration, and training skills
Ability to hold people accountable and to confidently confront and resolve conflicts constructively
Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, good judgement, and an eye for detail related to landscaping
Reliable and dependable
Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office applications

Position Duties and Functions
1. At all times set the tone for leadership consistent with Grunder Landscaping Co.’s values, mission, and philosophy by demonstrating and promoting positive leadership principles, predictable behavior, integrity, ethical behavior, and compliance with applicable regulations and company policies and procedures. Establish and maintain a level of credibility and trust that encourages team members to openly discuss issues.
2. Recruit, interview, develop, and lead direct reports. Set performance guidelines and communicate regularly regarding goals and objectives. Conduct periodic crew performance evaluations and coach and discipline direct reports as needed; in conjunction with the Director of Design Build, terminate team members when necessary.
3. Provide daily direction to, train, and monitor the work of direct reports. Ensure direct reports are aware of and abide by proper horticultural and construction techniques and company policies, processes, and procedures, including, but not limited to, standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, proper equipment operation and maintenance, and company policies pertaining to attendance and professional conduct.
4. Ensure consistency when holding team members accountable for complying with company policies, work rules, procedures, and standards; take immediate action when team members engage in undesirable behavior or actions. Document performance and coaching discussions according to company practices.
5. Actively work with Team Leaders to develop and train their subordinates. This includes, but is not limited to, helping to determine appropriate training goals and plans, providing ideas and recommendations for enhancing training procedures, and actively participating in training activities.
6. Give thorough, accurate, and timely briefings to the Director of Design Build regarding team member and client issues. Report any violations of company policies, safety protocols, or SOPs to the Director of Design Build as soon as possible. Proactively provide information in order to address and resolve issues early-on.
7. Offer recommendations regarding labor requirements to the Director of Design Build.
8. Immediately address issues related to safety concerns or damaged, broken, missing, or malfunctioning equipment. Elevate all safety-related issues to the Director of Design Build.
9. Investigate accidents, near-misses, and safety violations. Prepare appropriate reports, make recommendations for correcting any concerns and preventing future occurrences; implement actions after receiving approval from the Director of Design Build. As needed, enforce established remedies for safety violations.
10. Ensure that materials requirements for upcoming jobs are ordered on a timely basis.
11. Plan, schedule, and supervise daily construction activities. Assist crews as necessary to meet production schedules.
12. Monitor and manage assigned jobs and projects and inspect job sites. Take action where appropriate to ensure that the work and results are consistent with quality standards, safety requirements, and company practices. Ensure that company assets (tools and materials) are properly organized and maintained.
13. Meet with clients or client representatives to build rapport and trust, communicate job progress, and ensure expectations are being met.
14. Immediately address and treat as high priorities complaints from clients and team members (including the Design Team). Actively communicate with involved parties while resolving the concern and until the complainant acknowledges that the matter has been fully rectified.
15. Identify and recommend enhancement opportunities to the design team.
16. Update the design team on job progress; take action where appropriate or offer recommendations to correct variances outside of expected results.
17. As needed, assist the design team with conducting site analyses of prospective projects, including but not limited to, offering advice and recommendations pertaining to site logistics, construction materials, and labor considerations.
18. Provide information requested by another Group Leader’s team members to the individual on a timely basis.
19. Assume responsibility for other Group Leaders’ team members from time-to-time as needed. When doing so, involve the team members supervisor in any corrective actions that become necessary, unless circumstances dictate that the matter must be addressed immediately.
20. Review daily time records and other management reports and provide recommendations to management to ensure accuracy.
21. Identify and cultivate potential leaders who can have a positive impact on the organization’s success.
22. Stay up-to-date with industry trends, competitive challenges, and other relevant operational issues that may have a business impact. Monitor competitors’ worksites and jobs and provide any meaningful information to the Director of Design Build and team.
23. Conduct and attend meetings as necessary.
24. Perform all other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
Constant contact with managers, other Group Leaders, Designers, staff, clients, client representatives, property managers, subcontractors, project managers, and vendors. The majority of the work (80-90%) is performed outdoors with constant exposure to environmental and weather elements including, but not limited to, heat, cold, rain, wind, snow, grasses, dirt, bugs, plants, trees, shrubs, flowers, dust, and pollen. Work is performed in close proximity to machinery and loud noises. Frequent exposure to fertilizers, fumes, and lawncare chemicals. Work involves daily travel to and from job sites and operating a motor vehicle (with or without a trailer) on public roadways.
This position requires the ability to work full-time (five days per week, minimum of eight hours per day) with extended workdays and weekend work during the season, at times with little or no advanced notice.
Special Equipment
Must possess ability to efficiently and safely operate a variety of mechanical equipment and hand/power tools, including, but not limited to, articulating loader, skid steers, mini skid steers, mini excavator, string trimmers, bed edgers, rototillers, gas-powered sheers, plant augers, chainsaws, backpack blowers, and small, medium- and heavy-duty trucks with manual or automatic transmissions and truck and trailer combinations. Must be able to efficiently operate computers, cell phones, and related office devices.

Pay: $55,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
