Primary Function
A Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining various types of heavy equipment used in construction. They process advanced mechanical knowledge and skills to ensure the safe and efficient operation of heavy machinery.
Job Duties
- Equipment Inspection: Perform regular inspections to identify mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in heavy equipment specializing in Asphalt equipment, pavers, milling machines, and rollers.
- Diagnostic Analysis: Use diagnostic tools, equipment manuals, and computerized systems to troubleshoot and determine the cause of equipment malfunctions or breakdowns.
- Repair and Maintenance: Conduct repairs, adjustments, and maintenance tasks on engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, brakes, electrical systems, and other components of heavy equipment.
- Parts Replacement: Identify faulty or worn-out parts and replace them with new ones, ensuring proper fitting and alignment to restore equipment functionality.
- Preventive Maintenance: Scheduled inspections, lubrication, fluid changes, filter replacements, and other maintenance tasks to minimize breakdowns and extend equipment lifespan.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of equipment maintenance and repairs, including work performed, parts used, and any additional recommendations or observations.
- Safety Compliance: Follow safety protocols, procedures, and regulations while working on heavy equipment. Ensure compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines and industry best practices.
- Collaboration: Coordinate with equipment operators, supervisors, and other maintenance personnel to ensure effective communication, timely repairs, and minimize equipment downtime.
- Training and Development: Stay updated with the latest equipment technologies, repair techniques, and industry trends. Participate in training programs to enhance skills and knowledge.
Education/Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent. Vocational or technical training in heavy equipment repair or a related field is preferred.
- Proven experience as a heavy equipment mechanic, preferably has experience working on Asphalt equipment
- Strong knowledge of heavy equipment systems, components, and functions.
- Proficient in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues.
- Familiarity with diagnostic tools, equipment manuals, and computerized systems.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics.
- Experience in preventive maintenance and following maintenance schedules.
- Attention to detail and ability to perform accurate inspections and repairs.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Adherence to safety regulations and protocols.
- Physical strength and dexterity to handle heavy equipment and tools.
- Valid driver's license.
