POSITION SUMMARY:
The primary roles and responsibilities for this position is to perform a wide variety of paving tasks requiring a highly skilled individual that is involved in the control and operation of the screed on an asphalt paving machine. This position will also assist with other phases of the project as required.
DAILY OVERSIGHT AND RESPONSIBILITIES
· Understand and perform paving and other procedures safely to meet the standards of the project.
· Maintain and conduct regular maintenance to keep equipment clean and in good working order.
· Must be able to set screed sensors, adjust the screed crown and strike off.
· Understand the head of material for the screed.
· Ability to operate all equipment (screed, roller, asphalt paver, broom tractor and/or asphalt distributor) for effective laying of asphalt and at the proper speed to meet requirements as set forth in the plan.
· Set up and use automatic grade and slope control.
· Understand methods of paving to prevent segregation.
· Other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
· High school diploma or GED required.
· 3+ years of asphalt paving experience.
· Experience with construction with both road construction and other construction project work.
· Through understanding of all aspect of paving industry including preparatory work, grades, drainage, paving patterns, aggregate size, job specifications, compaction and other details related to asphalt paving.
· Responsible for ensuring efficient working condition of the equipment and to perform minor servicing and maintenance referring major problems to supervisor.
· Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions and to add, subtract, multiply and divide in units of measure.
Safety Responsibilities:
· Safety protocols are extremely important to follow.
· Follow all safety training and procedures displaying clear understanding through demonstration of safe work practices.
· Refer to and comply with instructions, requests, orders, and information posted within bulletins, memorandums, rules and regulatory guidance/manuals.
· Must be able to complete and pass requirements for background check and drug screening.
· Ability to obtain eRailSafe badge approval required.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
Position reports to the Paving Superintendent and is expected to operate under moderate supervisory involvement, depending on the task and the incumbent’s knowledge and ability to complete the task. All other staff remain available for information, advice, guidance, or assistance if needed and may provide training, coaching, and feedback as appropriate. This position supervises up to 0 employees depending on managerial needs.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The Asphalt Screed Operator will frequently stand, walk, climb, and move throughout the workday, use their hands, repeat the same movements, and bend or twist their body while handling products and conducting work. Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 lbs. Frequently move objects up to 65 lbs. Exposed to loud noise with possible exposure to live tracks and trains as well as high voltage areas.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The physical environment requires the employee to work outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. This position works in a very manual work environment with frequent exposure to outdoor elements.
